698 Legends: MM1(SS) McGann

Editor’s Note: I want to thank Russ Woods, ICC/SS USN (Ret) for keeping the memory alive with another great candid eye-witness reflection about one of the original USS Bremerton SSN 698 sailors.

This is a republication of an original posted in January 2017 in effort to consolidated some relevant 698 history and sea-stories in the bremertonreuion.net website.

If you would like to submit an “unclassified” 698 sea story for publication, please contact me, Challen Yee, for assistance.

  1. I’ve got stories about McGann, Herb Thyberg, Elmo Jacko and Sean Hanken that are unfit to print. Same goes for the crazy torpedo men. Sad to hear about MC Gagnon. When I first got to the boat it was in pieces at General Dynamics. I was a Fireman E2 and there were only 4 of us. MC Pomelle looked at me as said “what the hell am I going to do with you”. RW, I remembers lots of laughing with you all those years ago. Those days, those men helped shape my future and I owe a debt to all.

    1. Hi Tim, You must be a Plankowner, if you haven’t already provided your contact info to the Decommissioning organizers, you may and we will ensure you receive an invitation to the ceremony in 2021
